Nitrogen 5.0 is extensively used for blanketing, purging and pressurisation. It is the most commonly used laboratory gas.

- Carrier gas in gas chromatography
- Zero gas in analytical instruments
- Balance gas in calibration gas mixtures
- Combined with carbon dioxide to produce a gas mixture for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP)
- Component in fire extinguishers
